Did Google change its search algorithm to favour brands?

One of my colleagues in the Search Team at Ptarmigan Media recently picked up on a recent change by Google in their search ranking algorithm. He speculated on his blog that the change apparently gave more weight to brands in organic search results – a concern shared by many other search professionals.
