Just how important will digital be during the current downturn?

I was at a supplier showcase recently and was suprised to hear Google say that they regard the UK market as the most advanced digital market from a web perspective. Their reasoning goes:

  • 42 million people are online here in the UK or 69% of the population.
  • Brits not only spend a lot of time online shopping and doing research but also creating and sharing content. In fact UK consumers now spend an average of 12 hours online every week – or double the amount of time they spend reading newspapers and magazines.
  • 17p in every 1 pound in 2008 in the UK was spent online
  • In the first 6 months of 2008 18.5% of all UK advertising spend was online

In fact the speaker went on to say that in the UK they regard themselves as a media company while globally consider themselves to be a ‘technology’ company.
