Can companies use Twitter for business?

I’ve been on Twitter for the last 5-6 weeks as @stevepaulnewman. I’ve found Twitter incredibly effective as a way of finding and networking with other digital professionals. Some companies are however quite cynical as to the extent it could be utilised from a business perspective. This example from Alaska Airlines highlights its customer service possibilities, particularly around significant events – in this instance the eruption of Mt. Redoubt in Alaska.

I can envisage a scenario where a business could use Twitter to supplement its customer services area by taking some of the strain away from telephone support or for those sites with regularly updated content – as a way of flagging when new information is available online. Google have used this to great effect by Twittering about interesting content they have spotted or their own developments.

In summary, like all new tools, its what you do with it that counts – it is after all, all about execution!
