Is Twitter going mainstream? – Hedge fund managers are now tracking it

Ever since Twitter was first to break news of the Hudson plane crash its uptake has been phenominal. Many people remain cynical however as can been seen by how journalists are writing about it from this blog entry. I thought it interesting therefore to read in the Daily Telegraph that hedge fund managers are intending to monitor Twitter for price sensitive information with the aim of giving themselves a trading edge.  Even if their approach does not actually produce any tangible results, it shows that Twitter is being considered an increasingly credible source of information – particularly by this most conservative of sectors – financial services.

Financial Services Marketers should ensure that they are familiar with this emerging (if not mainstream) method of communication so they can at least discount it from their communication armoury. The alternative, use it as many other companies are now doing to tap into information mavens and key influencers – people who tend to be early adopters and thought leaders thereby reaching far wider consumer audiences.
